You would think that the end of a school year, or perhaps the very beginning of a school year would be the time I get the most questions about home schooling. I have found that right about this time of year, I get more questions about how to begin to home school. Maybe those questions come from parents who are considering home schooling but are not ready to take the plunge. Sometimes those questions come from parents who have just experienced the proverbial “last straw”. For those parents, their students have been in the public or private school system since August. The failings, either of the students, or the school systems, or both, is becoming frighteningly apparent.
For those of you who fall into this category, do not despair! Home schooling is not the great evil you’ve heard it to be. I know when I made the decision to home school several years ago, November was the month I cried almost daily. I didn’t want to be one of “them”. You know, “them”, the crazy homeschoolers. The semester had been horrible to that point, the school threatening to paddle and/or expel my first grader. I started looking for an alternative to public school. And no matter where I looked home schooling kept coming into focus.
I wanted someone, anyone, to tell me where to start, what exactly I had to do to pull my daughter from school, and what books I needed to use. I was terrified that I would make a wrong decision. What I wanted was a new to home schooling guide. What I needed was a mentor, someone with experience in home schooling to tell me it was all going to be alright. I researched on the internet for days. I probably logged a hundred hours. I checked out the laws in my state, and then I started looking for a home schooling curriculum. I found both things, the guide and the curriculum, in the same place. I found people with experience in home schooling there to ask questions, I had reassurances that every thing was going to be alright, I had a step by step guide to getting started in home schooling. I found lesson plans, scope and sequence, quizzes, chapter tests. I found it all in one place, Time4Learning. We have never looked back.
Now, regardless of whether you decide to use Time4Learning, or are just looking for good information, consider checking them out. And remember this, it will be ok, home schooling is not nearly as bad as you fear it will be. Check out the laws in your state, information from several places, such as those I have mentioned and linked to, and relax. It is going to be ok!!
