My name is Kat and my husband Walter and I have two boys, Bailey (8) and Braeden (3). We both work from home, I am a part time freelance writer and my husband is a full time editor and writer. We have been homeschooling for about 2 years now. You could not find a bigger example of “accidental homeschoolers” than my family. :o) Not only had we not planned on homeschooling, but at one point in my life I was adamantly against it. I lost a loved one to suicide during my first pregnancy and naively blamed homeschooling for that. (She was 16 and homeschooled and I thought that she needed a peer group)
We were very excited to put Bailey in school, I was always good at school and involved in a lot of the social activities, so I never thought we would have a problem. Bailey was right on track educationally, very outgoing and easily made new friends. Kindergarten was great. First grade started and it took two months to change my entire opinion of the school system here. Not public school everywhere, just here in my rural area.
Long story short, we couldn’t afford private school and nothing was being done about the problems we were encountering with the school. So…in a fit of anger I pulled Bailey out of school. We started homeschooling the next day and we were miserable. Through many wrong curriculum choices, nerves, tension and second guessing ourselves, I guess we stayed miserable for about a year and a half. I will say though that through all of this, the majority of our family and friends supported our decision, so that was good.
Then (this is where you see a bright light and hear a chorus of angels singing Hallelujah, lol) we found Time4Learning. We have been using it for about 10 months and we are hooked. We absolutely love the program. Bailey loves the lessons and the animations. We love the reports and the staff! :o) Our school days no longer have the problems we had with our “book work.” Along with finding T4L, our family met another family that homeschools and we all share similar interests. Tracy and I, and our husbands, have similar values that we want to instill in our children. We enjoy the same things, like movies, games, etc. Our families are our lives…they come first in everything. We are also similar in that, for personal/religious reasons, we never seemed to feel like we “fit” in with the stereotypical homeschooling family in our area (please note…not being critical here of the families in our area, I have met some fantastic families, just different than my own). We both struggled with the same problems with schooling our kids, our own insecurities (me more so than
